Image of historic stone bridgeSwedish weather is often not as cold as one may think and Gothenburg's climate has much to offer tourists, whatever time of the year you may choose to visit. Being located on the western coast of Sweden, Gothenburg is one of the county's warmest cities, thanks in no small part to its proximity to the Gulf Stream and its warming waters.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

The climate of Gothenburg is generally described as temperate and also maritime, and summers are predictably warm. Plenty of sunny weather means that temperatures in July and August regularly hover around 22°C / 72°F, at times rising to around 28°C / 82°F or even 30°C / 86°F. Gothenburg's summers are also the wettest season, particularly in July, although precipitation levels are by no means excessive and many downpours rarely last more than an hour or two.

However, although December and January are cold months, night-time temperatures rarely drop much below -1°C / 30°F or -2°C / 28°F.

Winter breaks are becoming increasingly popular in Gothenburg and many people come to enjoy the Christmas festivities and endless decorations in December, and also the superb winter sea-trout and salmon fishing, which is a definite highlight for many.
