Gothenburg Museums

(Gothenburg, Vastergotland, Vastra Gotaland County, Sweden)

Photo of the Goteborgs Maritima Centrum (Maritime Museum)Celebrating many different aspects of Gothenburg's rich past, the city's museums are varied to say the least. Particularly famous is the Gothenburg Maritime Museum (Göteborgs Maritima Centrum), currently the world's biggest ship museum. Highlights include a destroyer ship and also a large submarine, which visitors can fully explore in detail.

For something more traditional, the Gothenburg Natural History Museum (Naturhistoriska Museet) in the city's Linnéstaden is brimming with insects, butterflies, flowers, skeletons and stuffed animals, such as an enormous blue whale and elephant. Located within the 17th-century Skansen Krona fortress and full of weaponry exhibits, the Military Museum can be found in Gothenburg's Haga area and enjoys a hilltop location, affording superb views across the cityscape.
