The fifth-biggest of all the Nordic cities, Gothenburg has become a much visited Swedish tourist destination and lies on the south-westerly coastline of Sweden.
Home to a prominent sea port, the city has a series of attractive waterfront stretches, with many high-rise buildings making up the city's modern skyline.
The Älvsborg Bridge is an enormous suspension bridge and spans the Göta Alv River. At 933 metres / 3,060 feet in length, the Älvsborg Bridge is quite a sight and boasts two towers (pylons) at just over 100 metres / 328 feet in height.
Boat trips provide a pleasant way to explore the harbourfront of the city, offering great views and a different perspective.
Although the Feskekörka (Fish Church) looks rather like a church at first glance, appearances can be quite deceptive, for it is actually a historical fish market!
The Gothenburg Opera House is also known as the GöteborgsOperan and is a truly world-class music venue. Completed as recently as 1994, the GöteborgsOperan can accommodate audiences of just over 1,300 people and is clearly visible from the harbourfront.
The brightly coloured Götheborgsutkiken / Skanskaskrapan (Skanska Skyscraper) is much loved by locals and is certainly one sight that you'll find hard to miss. Standing at 83 metres / 272 feet in height, the towering Skanska Skyscraper comprises 23 floors and was designed by acclaimed Swedish architect Ralph Erskine.
When viewed from high above, the cityscape features a surprising number of green pockets of parkland and mature trees.
Tram transport in the city is an inexpensive way to travel around and often offers some pleasant waterfront views along the way.
