Gothenburg Art Galleries

The history of Scandinavian art is explained in great detail at the Gothenburg Museum of Art (Göteborgs Konstmuseum). Located within the Lorensberg area of Gothenburg, this is amongst the city's best art galleries and contains paintings by many emerging Swedish and Nordic artists, along with famous European artists such as Van Gogh and Monet.

Containing an interesting mix of both contemporary and more historic art works, the Boras Museum of Art (Boras Konstmuseum) can be found on the outskirts of Gothenburg and boasts a collection of more than 3,000 art works, with three floors and a strong emphasis on Swedish art in the latter part of the 20th century. Also onsite is a small auditorium area where many events take place.


Other art galleries in Gothenburg include the Konsthallen (Art Hall), which dates back to the 1920s and regularly hosts exhibitions of modern paintings and sculptures. For a chance to appreciate Scandinavian paintings at their very best, visit the highly acclaimed Nordic Watercolour Museum (Nordiska Akvarellmuseet). Sited in Skärhamn, Greater Gothenburg, this art gallery lies to the north of the city and on the western side of Tjörn Island.

In total, Gothenburg is home to over 30 different art galleries, the majority of which offer art works for sale and also free entry. The local tourist office contains a useful map which clearly indicates all of the city's art galleries and studios, and this is known as the 'Konst i Göteborg'.
