Gothenburg Restaurants and Dining

(Gothenburg, Vastergotland, Vastra Gotaland County, Sweden)

Around the Kungsportsavenyn you will find a huge choice of restaurants and when the sun is shining, the tables are moved outside and alfresco dining abounds, although the Avenyn is by no means a cheap area in which to eat out.

Gothenburg is still very much a busy maritime city and seaport, and this is clearly reflected in its large number of seafood restaurants. However, do bear in mind that many of Gothenburg's eateries choose to close on Sundays, so if you are looking for fine dining on a Sunday, you may need to plan ahead.

Where to Eat

Whilst the Avenyn is perhaps of the most fashionable places to eat out, there are still plenty of good quality restaurants all over Gothenburg, offering far better value and equally appealing menus. Both the Linnégatan and the Vasagatan contain plenty of restaurants, and since these areas offer less of the big-city feel, the whole dining experience is often considerably cheaper. Live music and terraces are commonplace around the Linnégatan and for those missing the UK, pay a visit to Gothenburg's very own English-style pub, the Notting Hill on Nordhemsgatan, close to the quaint neighbourhood of Haga.

The pedestrianised Haga Nygata street is where the Gothenburg cafe scene is booming and many unpretentious cafes and eateries line this stretch, offering simply dining, snacks and various cheap eats, often with good views of the cobbled street itself and its shoppers passing by. Several good restaurants are just a short walk away from here, on the Andra Langgatan and the Kaponjärgatan.

Further restaurants and eateries in Gothenburg are located within the moat area (Vallgraven) and in particularly around peaceful locations, such as Kungsgatan, Kungsparken, Östra Hamngatan, Södra Hamngatan and Vallgatan. In the very heart of this part of Gothenburg, Drottninggatan is well-known for being home to an acclaimed beer restaurant, the Brasserie Ferdinand, where more than 100 different kinds of beer accompany the extensive meat and seafood dining. If you enjoying eating out, be sure to check out the various eateries around the cultural spot of Götabergsgatan and the Götaplatsen, and of course the Karl Johansgatan (Karl Johans Gate).
